Small gallstones, microlithiasis and biliary sludge have been reported to be diagnosed with increasing frequency in patients with calcular cholecystitis. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy offers the most definitive therapy, however, small or tiny stones and biliary sludge may be overlooked in the cystic duct stump during standard Laparoscopic cholecystectomy technique.

The technique of cystic duct exploration during Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a simple and valuable technique in these cases especially if there is no available intraoperative cholangiography.
